FRSC Investigates Fatal Crash on Zaria-Kano Expressway

(SINL NIGERIA) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a tragic road traffic crash that led to the loss of 21 lives.

The incident occurred on Sunday, at around 8:20 am on the Zaria-Kano expressway.

A statement by Olusegun Ogungbemide,  Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer said he crash involved a heavy-duty DAF truck and a commercial Toyota Hiace passenger bus.

According to preliminary investigations by the FRSC rescue and crash investigation team, the crash was caused by route violation on the part of the commercial bus driver, who drove against traffic flow and collided head-on with the oncoming truck.

“Out of the 24 people involved in the crash, 21 persons – 19 male adults and 2 female adults – were killed, while 3 others sustained injuries.

Continuing, the statement said the FRSC rescue teams worked with other emergency responders to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow. “The remains of the victims have been deposited at Nasarawa hospital in Kano”.

Meanwhile, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that a full investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. 

The FRSC has warned all motorists, especially truck and commercial drivers, to desist from dangerous practices such as route violations, driving against traffic, speeding, and reckless overtaking, which continue to claim innocent lives on Nigerian roads.

The FRSC has reiterated the importance of strict adherence to road traffic regulations, which are in place to protect lives and properties. 

“The Corps will continue its nationwide enforcement operations and public education campaigns to ensure safer roads for all. Commuters and the motoring public are urged to report dangerous driving behaviors through the FRSC Mobile Application or by calling the FRSC toll-free number 122”.
