(SINL NIGERIA) The Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) on Wednesday convened a significant gathering of stakeholders in Abuja.
The forum’s theme, “Research Capabilities in Nigeria: The Journey So Far,” prompted reflection on progress, challenges, and opportunities in agricultural research.
Declaring the Maiden Edition of the National Agricultural Research Forum open, Executive Secretary of ARCN, Dr. Abubakar Adamu Dabban said Nigeria’s National Agricultural Research System has made notable strides, building impressive capabilities in human resources, technological innovations, and collaborative frameworks.
He added that these achievements are a testament to strong partnerships among government, research institutions, the private sector, and farming communities.
Dr. Dabban proposed that the forum be held annually to sustain momentum and drive continuous improvement.
“The ARCN acknowledged the invaluable contributions of partners, including the CGIAR family, ECOWAS, and the private sector, whose commitment has strengthened Nigeria’s research capabilities”.
While celebrating successes, Dr. Dabban emphasized the need for growth and improvement, highlighting the importance of sustaining and enhancing capabilities to deliver greater impact.
According to Dabban, the ARCN is committed to building on past legacies by pursuing initiatives aligned with strategic goals.
He highlighted the priorities to include developing strategic plans, revisiting key policies, and ensuring full implementation of the ARCN Act.
Additionally, he said the forum aimed to generate insights shaping the future of agricultural research in Nigeria, with a focus on strengthening research governance, investing in capacity building, and fostering collaboration.
“By working together, stakeholders can advance agricultural research in Nigeria, driving food security and sustainable development” he added.
