(SINL NIGERIA) The National Assembly has announced plans to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy through two significant legislative initiatives.
According to Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Leader of the Senate, the parliament intends to enact a law requiring president-elects to be sworn in at the National Assembly arcade.
Additionally, he said the National Assembly plans to revive a legislative initiative mandating the President to deliver the State of the Nation address in the hallowed chamber of the National Assembly on June 12 annually.
Bamidele made the disclosure on Tuesday during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja, highlighting the significance of June 12, a day that commemorates Nigeria’s Democracy Day in honor of Late Chief MKO Abiola.
The Senate Leader emphasized that the National Assembly is working closely with President Bola Tinubu to institutionalize the State of the Nation address.
“A bill will be introduced soon to ensure that this practice becomes a regular feature of Nigeria’s democratic landscape”.
Bamidele noted that June 12, given its historical significance, would be an ideal date for the President to address the nation through a joint sitting of the National Assembly.
The leader of the senate expressed the National Assembly’s hope to change the country’s political landscape by ensuring that the next President and Commander-in-Chief is sworn in at the National Assembly arcade.
This move, according to him, is aimed at strengthening the country’s democratic institutions and promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
