(SINL NIGERIA) The National Assembly joint committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff has urged the Nigeria Customs Service to reverse immediately to implementation of 4 percent Free on Board (FOB) policy.
The chairman of the Senate committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, Senator Isah Jibrin (APC, Kogi East) gave the order on Monday during an interactive session with the minister of finance, Wale Edun and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi in Abuja.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi had earlier told the session that the 2024 budget was predicated on 4 percent FOB but implementation on 7 percent collection.
Irked by the action, the committee ordered for immediate reversal to provision of the law.
Additionally, Senator Jibrin bemoaned the low performance of capital and personnel components of the 2024 budget of the Nigeria Customs, stressed the need for accountability and full adherence to laws enacted by the National Assembly.
“4 percent FOB should be implemented as enshrined in the law” Senator Jibrin said.
Meanwhile the minister of finance, Wale Edun assured the joint committee that the Nigeria Customs will obey the 4 percent Free on Board policy of the federal government.
“It is a law, we are going to obey 4 percent FOB” the Minister remarked.
Commenting on porous borders of the country by the lawmakers, the CG of Customs said “we have created new commands, we are also collaborating with other agencies”.
He however added that “we need technology to survey our borders”.
