PIB: NASS ‘ll be thorough -Lawan, Gbajabiamila

The National Assembly on Monday assured that it will be thorough in the consideration of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) which is before the Nigerian parliament.


Chairman of the National Assembly and Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan made the disclosure when the leadership of the two Chambers played host to the minister of state for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Silva and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari in Abuja.


According to Lawan, the meeting was to discuss the essence and focus of the PIB sent to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Specifically, he said Buhari’s letter containing the bill will be unveil at the plenary of both Chambers when the lawmakers resumes plenary tomorrow.

“This is the first meeting between the ministry of petroleum resources and other agencies with leadership of National Assembly on the essence of PIB that has been sent to the National Assembly.

“The essence is to interact with you and have idea of what is in the bill before it goes to the committee.

“PIB is an executive bill, we want to break the jinx, try to make us understand the bill, we want to pass the bill as quickly as possible, but we will be thorough” he said.

Speaking separately, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila stressed that “we are here to pass the most important piece of legislation”.

He added “The 9th National Assembly will set the record with a caveat, but we will not sacrifice thoroughness”.

Gbajabiamila revealed that the House had assembled a crack team of legislators in an ad-hoc Committee that will be working with the ministry to get to the same destination.

“The bill is coming at a time when we will be passing the budget” he added.

Also speaking, the minister of petroleum resources, Timipre Silva noted that PIB is one of the most important piece of legislation, saying it has taken a long time.

He said the PIB is at the core of the Nigerian economy.

He added that the significance of the bill is to make Nigeria an attractive investment destination.
