The independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has warned whistleblowers against given false information, saying doing so attract negative consequences.
Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, ICPC, Borno Yobe command, Mr Linus Gubbi, made the call while commemorating African Anti-corruption Day 2025, in Maiduguri on Friday.
The 2025 event was themed” Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption”
Gubbi noted that the commission has full protection for whistleblowers who exposed corruption and illegal activity in work places and the society.
“Unfortunately, some of the whistleblowers, once they give you the information, they would go and broadcast it.
“They will tell their colleagues and brothers that they come to ICPC and volunteer so and so informations and blow their cover,” he said.
The commissioner regretted that in some places where such information leaked, the whistleblowers got sacked and the commission had to step in reinstating them.
Gubbi said that various channels of reporting corrupt practices were made available for whistleblowers by the commission through physical submission of petitions and social media handles.
“The ones that comes as whistleblowers mostly come physically and volunteer whatever information they want to give and we keep their identity secret.
“We don’t even engage them on phones, we make sure whatever information and dealing are handled personally. Sometimes we give pseudonyms to hide their identity and protect them, especially in those areas where there are security problems” he said.
He, however, called on whistle blowers to always be sure of the information provided to the commission because false information attracts a penalty of 10 years imprisonment.
To nip corruption in the bud, Gubbi said they collaborate with a lot of schools, NGOs, CSOs to promote the fight against corruption across the states.

is not just focused on arrest, we are also involved in educating and sensitizing people against corruption practices.
“People also need to know the dangers of corruption so that they don’t celebrate those who are caught in the act of corruption because of certain variables and diversities of our nation” he said
