Ahead of the 2023 general election, the Department of state services (DSS) has said it will continue to recognise the media as strategic partner in nation building.
The Service emphasised that the media is critical in peace building and political stability.
Dr. Peter Afunanya, the spokesperson of the DSS made this known at a press conference held in Abuja.
He noted that as the nation prepare for the 2023 general election, this is not the time to plan mischieve or destabilize the country.
“Nigeria is the only country we have, hence, citizens must be patriotic.
“Our message is simple, the media will have to be up and doing in restoring peace in Nigeria.
“The DSS is advising that the media must see Nigeria as the only nation they have. We are imploring you to go outside and ensure there is peace in the land. We on our part will continue to engage stakeholders”.
Afunanya explained that few months ago the service engaged civil societies organisations CSOs and non governmental organisations NGOs.
He reiterated that peace is critical at a time like this, saying ethnic disharmony should be discouraged.
He however urged the media to shun fake news and violence, adding that “we are in political era and we must shun acts inimical to our democracy”.
According to Afunanya “we should shun act that will make us to live in fear. We are asking every Nigerian to be our brothers keeper and pass useful information to security agencies”.
He maintained that the DSS believe in synergy in crime prevention. “We are committed to achieving peace and will work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that we rid Nigeria of violence”.
