Jigawa court sentences man to life imprisonment over rape, impregnating of minor

A Jigawa High Court has Sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping and impregnating a12 year-old girl.


The court however acquitted three others accused of armed robbery. 

The Jigawa High Court of Justice sitting in Hadejia Presided by Hon. Justice Ado Yusuf Birnin Kudu has on 29th June 2021 convicted one Jibril Idi to life imprisonment for the offence of Rape and impregnating 12 year old girl.

 
The offence is contrary to Section 282 (1) (e) of the Penal Code Cap P3 Laws of Jigawa State 2012 and punishable under Section 3 of the Penal Code (Miscellaneous Amendment) Law No. 9, 2014.

In a statement issued and signed by Zainab Baba Santali Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Justice said the facts of the case were that, Jibril Idi raped and got a 12 year old girl (name withheld) pregnant  on 27th May 2017, in Diginsa village of Birniwa local government of Jigawa State. At the time, the victim was a JS1 student.

During the trial, the defendant pleaded not guilty for the offence. As such the prosecution counsel in their efforts to prove the case against the defendant called four witnesses and tendered three exhibits and closed its case.

The defence counsel also opened their defense and closed. 

In his judgment, Hon. Justice Ado Yusuf Birnin Kudu found the defendant guilty of the offence of rape and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Maigari Sadiq has on 30th June 2021, acquitted three men on two separate charges of Criminal Conspiracy and Armed robbery. 

The defendants were alleged to have conspired and robbed a woman at Kaci Fulani village settlement on 10th August 2017 and another on 29th August 2017 in Dundubus Village of Dutse Local Government of Jigawa State.


During the trial, evidence was led by the prosecution, in a bid to prove the charge against the accused persons and at the stage of tendering their respective confessional statements, they raised an objection as to the voluntariness of same.


At the end of the trial, the statements were rejected by the trial judge, adding the accused persons are not guilty of the offences and thereby discharged and set them free.
