In a bid to provide portable drinking water to the citizenry, Zamfara state government has constructed a total of 980 hand pumps across the State.
The government has also provided 9 earth dam and upgraded water laboratories to enhance water parameter testing in the State.
The State commissioner for water resources Ibrahim Isah Mayana made the disclosure to mark the 2022 world water day.
The commissioner revealed that the theme of this year’s world water day was ‘Making the invisible visible’, emphasised that no life can live without water, an essential component of life.
“It is because of the importance of this precious resource, United Nation observance declared 22rd March of every year as world water day which started in 1993.
“This year, we celebrate water and raise awareness of 2 billion people currently living without access to safe drinking water and to inspire action toward sustainable development goals, water and sanitation for all by 2030”.
According to him, UNICEF has contributed in the rehabilitation and construction of hand pumps, motorized solar boreholes in some cholera affected communities in the State.
He maintained that the ministry of water resources would continue to work with all relevant stakeholders in water cluster both institutional and private sector in creating awareness on the importance of ground water.
In his remarks, the UNICEF consultant in the State, Mr Toyin Adisa lamented that ground water has been abused, saying there was need for more enlightenment to the communities on the importance of groundwater consumption.
“Let us stop abusing groundwater, communities should stand and protect people from abuse of water” he said.
