Communities in Jigawa state are making effort to prevent Cholera outbreak through sensitisation and sanitization of their surroundings across the 27 LGAs.
The exercise which was supported by Save the Children International (SCI), is aimed at preventing the reoccurrence of the Cholera outbreak that killed many people across the state in 2021.
Speaking to SINL Nigeria Online at the weekend, the Community leader of Malam Shehu Kandi in Kudai town, Alhaji Mohammed Abdulkarim said they were devastated by Cholera outbreak in 2021.
“We want government to provide portable drinking water and drainages in our towns, adequate hospital beds in our healthcare centre, drugs for small children and pregnant mothers against Malaria”, Abdulkarim added.
Also speaking, Hadiza Sabo from Save the Children International, said they are involved in sensitizing the communities on what is Cholera and how to prevent it’s occurrence, how to keep their environment and surroundings clean.
“We entered inside the individual houses, inspected their sources of drinking water and asked them to relocate their sewages far away from their wells. We showed them how to keep their body, clothes and children clean”, She said.
She added that SCI has provided working tools for the communities such as “water guard for distillation, big rubber containers for water preservation, rubber buckets with covers, Jerricans, Up-tape for water purification among others”.
“We are using the community structures, 15 selected people from the villages and towns within Dutse LGA. We trained them and they are being paid some allowances, gave them Clorine, sprayers as well as hand gloves”, she concluded.
