No fewer than 235 Obstetric Fistula patients have been treated in Jahun General hospital in Jigawa state from January, 2022 to date.
This was disclosed on Thursday by the “Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF)”, at a ceremony held in Jahun General hospital, the headquarters of Jahun LGA of Jigawa state.
Addressing the recovered patients, Dr Jean-Clément Ishimwe, MSF Field Coordinator in Jahun said about 100 women who suffered from obstetric fistula are also returning home.
“We gave them spaghetti-making machine and flour to enable them start small businesses at home as self-reliance activities”, Dr Jean-added.
“From January to November 2022, 235 women suffering from fistula were successfully treated with surgical intervention, while 282 women had their fistula repaired in 2021”, Dr Jean said.
Dr Jean said during the same period, MSF team in Jahun provided 33,917 women with antenatal care, assisted 12,519 deliveries and another 1,626 deliveries through caesarean section.
He added that about 50 women who successfully completed the fistula treatment will start a rehabilitation and skill acquisition training in January 2023.
Dr Jean pointed out that the program is supported by the Fistula Foundation and the State Ministry of Women Affairs, since 2008.
The hospital in Jahun started with five beds and now has 50 beds of Obstetric Fistula patients.
