National Coalition for Peace and Unity (NCPU) has cautioned political parties and their supporters against utterances capable of tearing the country apart, especially now that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is still collating results.
The Coalition in a statement on Monday by Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Protem Secretary General of NCPU noted the statement credited to some party officials that the Endsars will be a child’s play if the election doesn’t go their way. “Nigerians should note that in a moment of crisis, the poor masses are mostly the victims, while the rich have ways of taking care of themselves. We should be mindful of inciteful statements capable of destroying a peaceful setting”.
“Coalition also want to tell the public that social media has a way of misdirecting the public, as such, information coming from these channels should not be taken wholeheartedly”.
NCPU urged the public to be mindful of the reports they believe, saying INEC is the body constitutionally empowered to announce election results.
“While we are cautioning the public to be watchful and filter the reports out there before drawing conclusion, it is also very important to note that false reports have a way of causing serious crisis.
“Drawing conclusion before understanding the scenario is not good for peaceful co-existence, becaue when the truth eventually comes out, the lies and false information will dictate the pace and action”.
Continuing, the peace Coalition called on the public to be careful at this point in time, stressing that sentiments are high and people are differs in opinions and approach to issues.
“Our objective is to manage the expected post election crisis in other to secure the unity of the nation. We have been telling Nigerians to walk the part of peace, so that the nation will not engulf in flame.
“We have during our inauguration called on the leader and elders of the land to rise and put in place all proactive measures to forestall the potential of national crisis. Now that the election is over, we are also calling them to put their feets down to forestall any untoward issue after the winner of the presidential poll has been announced.
“We want to congratulate Nigerians for coming out en-mass to vote during the presidential and National Assembly election” the statement concluded.
