The Senate has summoned the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to explain the circumstances surrounding undisclosed admission phenomenon and career killing saga.
Specifically, the Senate compelled JAMB to give admission letter to Miss Chinyere Ekwe to study medicine and surgery without further delay.
Similarly, the upper legislative chamber also compelled JAMB and UNN to resolve the lingering cases of undisclosed admissions that has left the fate of 290 qualified students hanging in the balance in the University by given them their admission letters.
This is sequel to a motion titled: “Urgent need to curtail the practice of undisclosed admissions and other unwholesome practices by JAMB and universities, particularly the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, at the plenary on Wednesday.
The motion sponsored by Senator Peter Nwebonyi (Ebonyi North) raised the alarm that authorities of tertiary institutions, in collaboration with some JAMB officials have reverted to the practice of provisional admission into prized professional courses like medicine and surgery, pharmacy, law, engineering, nursing science with the view to shortchanging some students already offered admission in exchange for gratification.
Indeed, Senator Nwebonyi cited the travails of Miss Chinyere Ekwe and 290 others who were admitted to study medicine and surgery at UNN but had their admissions truncated on the order of JAMB for no reason, after completing admission processes and resumed lectures.
“Miss Ekwe scored 291 in the 2019 UTME and 300 in University’s post UTME which qualified her for the
course, and was subsequently admitted by the university.
“Ekwe was transferred to the department of medical laboratory science on the ground that if her cumulative grade point is up to 4.5 after the first year, she would be transferred back to medicine and surgery.
He continued: “Despite the fact she surpassed the 4.5 threshold, her admission status is still not yet certain as to whether she is duly admitted in the department of medicine and surgery or medical laboratory science”.
The lawmaker bemoaned that such unwholesome practices put the country’s educational system in jeopardy, cause apathy on the side of ordinary Nigerians and also dampen the renewed hope of the present administration.
Meanwhile, the motion was referred to senate committees on tertiary institutions as well as ethics, privilege and public petitions.
