The chairman of senate committee on Agriculture Colleges and Institutions, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire has said Nigeria has a lot of potentials in trying to ensure food security, saying what is lacking is funding.

He also expressed optimism in the potentials of Agriculture Colleges and Institutions in Nigeria, adding that funding is the challenges being faced by the Institutions.

Adegbonmire, representing Ondo central at the 10th Senate made the observation at the sideline of a meeting of the committee with Agriculture Colleges and Institutions which ended Thursday in Abuja.

“There is a lot of potentials in the Institutions we have interacted with in the last three days.

“The take away is inadequate funding” he said.

Adegbonmire, who doubles as the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters explained that Nigeria has potential to ensure food security, protection of farmlands, adequate agricultural produce, however noted that what has been lacking is for government to properly fund these Institutions.

He added that given the present economic realities, it will be difficult for government to fund the institutions.

“My advice to some of them who have ability to generate revenue is to look at ways of partnering with private sector to see the gap in funding” Adegbonmire said.
