The Northern senators forum (NSF) has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to consider a lift of restrictions on Niger Republic.
The forum also condemned in a strong terms the spate of military intervention in the democratic space in West African sub-region.
Specifically, the northern senators condemned the coup in Niger Republic.
Rising from a meeting on Tuesday, the NSF said it is important that Nigerien should not suffer because of the coup that took place “just as we have seen in Gaza”.
A communique at the end of the meeting and read by Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) however urged President Bola Tinubu to restore electricity supply to Niger Republic in line with the Nigeria-Niger treaty mandate.
“The NSF urges the ECOWAS to lift restrictions on Niger Republic in the interest of business and border communities.
“President and Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces and of course the Chairman of ECOWAS, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu to as a matter of humanitarian gesture, restore electricity supply to Niger Republic in line with the Nigeria-Niger treaty mandate.
“We therefore call on the attention of Nigerien that we remain brothers, partners, Africans and above all, we remain human beings.
“The NSF urges the military junta in Niger Republic to soften the relationship with the rest of ECOWAS Community by setting free President Mohammed Bazoum and his immediate family”.
The forum further urged the junta in Niger Republic to bring about a transition timetable that will last not more than two years.
