Governors Mandate Network (GMN), on Tuesday, warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against encouraging or endorsing any electioneering process that would put the health of the masses at risk.

The Chairman of GMN, Osaro Onaiwu, in a statement in Abuja, charged INEC to ensure that the protocols established by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) is followed strictly before and during Edo and Ondo State governorship elections.

Onaiwu further enjoined the electoral umpire to closely monitor the guidelines emplaced by the political parties in these states to ensure that they were COVID-19-compliant.

He noted that the pandemic was still very active in the country and that political parties or politicians must not be allowed to endanger the lives of people under the excuses of electioneering.

According to him, the world is watching and any action or inaction of critical stakeholders may leave an indelible mark on the wellness of the masses in the days to come.

“Anything short of a modest election process that will ensure minimum mass gathering will not be acceptable to health-conscious people,” Onaiwu said.
