Jigawa: Flood claims 16 lives, displaces 3,936 households

Jigawa state government has said 16 people recently lost their lives at different locations while over 3,936 households were submerged in a flood across10 local government areas of the state. 

This was announced on Wednesday by the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Haruna Mairiga while briefing newsmen in Dutse. 

He explained that over 3834 individuals lost their houses and belongings yet to be quantified in  monetary terms. 

He said worrisome is about 2734 hactares of farm lands lost to flood across the affected communities in the state.

“Some of these communities were about to start harvesting their rice, when this ugly incident happened. 

“The State Governor is doing his best to assist the affected people  across the 10 local governmentovernment areas.

“To stop the flood from wrecking further havoc, the state government has planned to construct more dams in all the flood prone areas in the state.

“A committee has already been set up along with Fund raising committee, the Governor asked us to take available relief materials to all the affected places”

Mairiga also disclosed that presently the state government has more than enough relief materials for the affected victims in its stores and warehouses.
