No fewer than 205,364 complaints were recorded in the February edition of the monthly dashboard of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The Executive Secretary of NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN) made the revelation on Wednesday during the monthly dashboard report of the commission held in Abuja.
According to Ojukwu, the dashboard is merely a starting point, a tool to provoke dialogue, and inspire concrete steps toward solutions. “We must continue working with government agencies, civil society, international partners, and communities to address these violations and find lasting solutions” he said.
He added that”the disturbing trend of child abandonment remains largely unaddressed with an upsurge in reported cases to our offices.
“In a bid to support our work as frontline human rights defenders in dealing with issues of women and children, the NHRC has approved a
Child Safeguarding Policy”.
Additionally, Ojukwu said “we have noticed recently the use of our dashboard information and statistics at state level by political actors. We understand the emotions that may arise when
states are faced with the realities of the information relating to their states.
“We welcome every debate and continue to call on states government to study the dashboard carefully and take actions aimed at addressing the challenges highlighted by the Commission” he said.
Meanwhile, presenting specifics of February 2025 human rights dashboard, Senior Human Rights Adviser, Hilary Ogbonna noted that there were 1493 cases of child abandonment, 191 killings, 144 kidnappings and 7 cases of killing of security and law enforcement agents in the period under review.
He stated that out of the 205,364 complaints received in February, North Central maintained a lead in human rights complaints, followed by North East, South East and South South.
