(SINL NIGERIA) As the Nigerian Senate approves National Security Summit to tackle insecurity, the Senator Representing Bauch Central, Senator Abdul Ningi has differed on the approach to secure the country.
The Senator said he is not totally against the forth coming summit if it will bring the desired result, however bemoaned huge expenditure on Tucano fighter jets in the past, which is being under utilized.
Ningi, also posited that President Bola Tinubu should consider what he called Presidential Security Advisory Committee (PSAC) to proffer solutions on insecurity.
The PSAC, according to the lawmaker will be made up of former senior security officers with vast experience and who have distinguished themselves while in service.
Ningi, who is the chairman Senate committee on Sports spoke on Tuesday in Abuja.
Specifically, he mentioned former military chiefs who could salvage the situation to include, General Victor Malu (rtd), General Martins Agwai (rtd), former IGP Musiliu Smith among others, who can be invited to advise the president on the way forward.
Commenting on the Tucano jets, Senator Ningi decried the theory that the jets came with some contract limitation, which has affected its usage.
“If you know that there are limitations, why did you go there to buy knowing it cannot be put to use, what is the purpose of buying it in the first place?
“We have seen and heard what Tucanos jet can do and is doing in Ukraine, Russia, and other part of the world but in Nigeria the reverse is the case.”
Additionally, he urged the Senate Committees on Army, Navy, Air-Force, Police to report to the Senate Plenary their findings on security and it management.
Continuing, he said “what stopped the committees from bringing all the service chiefs together and interrogate them and report back to the plenary. What has the committees found in the last one year through their oversight?,”
“To the best of my knowledge, we have not heard anything from the committees, so I challenge anyone to come forward and tell the world what the committees have said or have brought to the plenary.”
“The Senate should dig out what is the problem and let Nigerians know” Ningi said.
It would be recalled that the Senate on Tuesday approved a motion sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South) to organize a two-day national security summit in a bid to tackle myriad of insecurity challenges in Nigeria.
