Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (SAN), has thrown his weight behind the economic policies of the federal government.
The lawmaker referred to the removal of fuel subsidy as tough but necessary decision by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led federal government.
The Senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on the second anniversary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration on Tuesday in Abuja.
He stated that the tough measures is designed to rescue Nigeria from total collapse.
According to Adegbonmire, inherited a country ravaged by decades of financial mismanagement and unrealistic subsidy regimes.
He said “We were spending money we didn’t have. And when the government tried to take tough decisions, you people shouted oh, people are suffering, so they borrowed to keep you quiet.
“There is nothing free about subsidies, that money belongs to all of us. You say it’s cheaper fuel, but that N500 difference could have gone into hospitals and roads” he said.
He however, decried past leaders, for perpetuating unsustainable economic models, and slammed critics who expect Tinubu to reverse decades of damage in under two years.
Continuing he said “Nobody can fix Nigeria in two years,” he stated.
He challenged Tinubu’s critics including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to say whether they would have done anything differently, saying both men promised to remove fuel subsidies.
