The Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area, Hon. Emma Bazim Chinye, is in the custody of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, over alleged role in the murder of Mr. Osordi Kingsley Ogugua.
He has been held since Thursday, May 23, 2025, following a petition submitted by the law firm, S. Kelechi Nnadi & Co., acting on behalf of Chief Jerry Nkeweshe and Mr. Felix Asuku.
According to the petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, the murder occurred during a visit by the victims and officers of the SIU to Onicha Olona in Aniocha North, Delta State.
The team had gone to inspect and document the remains of buildings recently set ablaze by suspected political thugs allegedly operating under the protection of Hon. Emma Chinye.
The petition states that while this police-supervised activity was ongoing, the team was ambushed and attacked by a heavily armed gang.
Mr. Osordi Kingsley Ogugua was shot dead during the attack, while Chief Nkeweshe, Mr. Asuku, and several police officers narrowly escaped with their lives.
In the words of the petitioners, “This unprovoked and coordinated attack led to the tragic and instantaneous death of Mr. Osordi Kingsley Ogugua, who sustained fatal gunshot wounds in the process.”
The document also accused a known gang leader, Mr. Ngozi Okafor, of pulling the trigger that killed Osordi.
Additionally, It alleged that Mr. Okafor, despite a history of criminal offences including illegal firearm possession, continues to enjoy protection from Hon. Emma Chinye.
Several of the suspects previously arrested in connection with related crimes were said to have been released on bail to Chinye, who has since failed to produce them before police authorities in Abuja.
The petition further alleged that the Delta State Commissioner of Police has been frustrating ongoing investigations.
Specifically, it claimed that the CP directed SIU officers to release one of the key suspects, Mr. Paul Okwusindi, despite a standing directive from the Inspector General of Police to charge him to court for offences bordering on terrorism, arson, and attempted murder.
There is also an allegation of attempts to distort the investigation narrative.
According to the petition, “The Commissioner of Police has allegedly been pressuring and attempting to manipulate the investigators by coercing the SIU officers to implicate Chief Jerry Nkeweshe, whose brother was the slain Mr. Osordi Kingsley Ogugua, as the aggressor”
Hon. Emma Chinye is expected to undergo extensive interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.
As of press time, the Police Force Headquarters has not released an official statement regarding the arrest, but sources within the SIU confirmed that Chinye remains in custody as investigators build their case.
The petitioners have demanded that all suspects be re-arrested and prosecuted, saying that Chinye be compelled to produce those earlier granted bail through his influence.
