As Nigeria celebrate 60 years of Independence, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has observed that despite challenges being encounter by the nation, it is not totally bad for the country.
He noted that Nigeria has achieved progress in the education sector, saying “if you consider education, between 1960 to date, we have had turbulence, but the number of people that have gone to school is encouraging”.
The former governor of Kano state spoke on Wednesday with newsmen in Abuja.
He added that there was nothing wrong with the Nigeria education curriculum, but lack of motivation and quality teachers among others.
Politically, Shekarau explained that from 1999 to date, “we never had this kind of stability” adding that in an advanced democracy like America, “when they were 20 years into their democracy, they were not as peaceful as we are”.
According to the lawmaker, certain impediments had hinder the country’s growth.
Specifically, he identified parameters that determine good governance to include, voice and accountability, saying there should be voice and accountability between leadership and the people.
“There must be political stability, if there is no stability you cannot have good governance.
“Effectiveness of governance, rule of law, control of corruption” Shekarau said.
The former minister of Education added “When you talk of corruption control, you must have social justice”
