Manchester United have reportedly expended £10.5 million in total to retain the loan services of Shanghai Shenhua striker Odion Ighalo until January 2021.
Eyebrows were raised when the former Watford striker made his deadline day switch from the Chinese Super League side in January, but the 30-year-old quickly made an impression at Old Trafford.
Ighalo scored four goals in eight appearances for the club he supported since childhood, only for the coronavirus suspension in England to take the season well beyond the loan deal’s 31 May expiration.
But the Nigeria international is now staying put after an extension agreement was reached, keeping him at Man United until 31 January 2021.
And the Daily Mail claims that Man United have agreed to pay ‘a £6 million fee’ to Shanghai Shenhua, while they have committed to pay ‘just under half of Ighalo’s £300 000-a-week wages’.
That means the Chinese Super League side ‘will receive a total of £10.5m, with the £6m loan fee and £130 000-a-week salary combined’ from Man Utd.
Despite Shanghai offering him a new contract, which would have seen his wages increased by a further £100 000 a week, Ighalo was keen to stay with the Red Devils.
