(SINL NIGERIA)The Executive Secretary National Human Rights Commission Commission (NHRC) Dr. Tony Ojukwu SAN has said despite efforts to promote laws and policies supporting women’s rights, a significant gap remains between policy and implementation, resulting in a decline in women’s political representation and governance.
In a remark to commemorate the IWD which is celebrated every 8th of March, the Executive Secretary stated that the 35% affirmative action is gradually becoming a daunting task to achieve for Nigerian women, and a mere mirage.
Dr. Ojukwu acknowledged that the government has initiated notable programs, such as the “Trader Money” initiative, which has upgraded the businesses of many market women across the country.
He also commended efforts by state governments, particularly Kwara State, in promoting women’s rights through appointments to governance positions.
The Human Rights Advocate emphasized the importance of supporting women’s empowerment through various interventions by stakeholders.
While urging legislators to pass outstanding gender laws, he emphasized the need for stakeholders to challenge stereotypes and promote equality.
The Chief Human Rights Officer of the country reaffirmed the commitment of the Commission to galvanize stakeholders for the domestication of the Maputo Protocol, aimed at creating a more equitable society for women.
“We must strive for a future where every woman in Nigeria can thrive,” the Executive Secretary said.
“We must dismantle barriers, uplift silenced voices, and take proactive steps to enhance and protect women’s rights.”
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on the 8th of March.
