The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Senator representing Plateau North, Istifanus Gyang have presented relief materials to communities in Plateau North, where bandits suspected to be herdsmen unleashed terror.
The attacks, which perished dozens of lives in communities in Riyom, Barkin-Ladi and Bassa Local Government Areas respectively, left the inhabitants displaced and are currently facing acute hunger.
The pathetic condition of the people compelled Senator representing Plateau North, Istifanus Gyang to approached NEMA and solicited relief materials to cushion the effects of the attacks on the displaced persons.
The Director General of NEMA North Central, who was represented by Judith Bai distributed the relief materials in collaboration with the Senator at the weekend in Jos, Plateau State.
“The North Central Zone office conducted an assessment to determine the extent of damage and the level of Federal Government assistance require.
“Based on the reports of these assessments, the relief materials approved by the Federal Government in support of the affected communities are 500 bags of 10kg rice, 500 bags of 10kg beans, 500 bags of 10kg garri, 150 kegs of vegetable oil 20litres.
Others area, “150 cartons of tin tomato 24 by 48, 150kegs of palm oil 20litres, 150 cartons of seasoning cubes, 150bags of salt 20kg, 200 cartons of 500g Milo, 200 cartons of 350g powder milk, 200bags of 20kg of granulated sugar”.
Member representing Plateau North in the upper chamber Sen. Gyang who requested for NEMA intervention said his constituency have been visited with devastated terror attacks that has led to the displacement of people in the communities.
“Most of my people have been uprooted from their ancestral homes and today largely at the internally displaced camps.
“The issue of addressing Insecurity is even beyond the state government, enforcement of law and order is the responsibility of government at all levels.
“We in the National Assembly are working to ensure that we amend the constitution to allow for the establishment of state police, so that the state can be better equipped to decisively address security within their territory.
“Today we want to appreciate NEMA and on behalf of the IDPs in Plateau North for this intervention with such relief materials”.
He emphasized that the 73 motorbikes donated by him will be distributed to all the ward chairmen of the 73 wards in his constituency for quick mobilization in terms of security and information management.
“Our objectives is bringing peace to the communities in Plateau North, it is to quickly liaise between the ward chairmen and security agencies at ward levels and for management of information and effective coordination at the community level and to strengthen our structures at the community level for peace”.
Dachung Bitrus Weng one of the beneficiaries expressed satisfaction to the senator for providing such means for them to help and carter for their families as they engage on transportation business.
