Jigawa state government has expended over N35m in the last six years to control the perennial flooding in riverine areas of Hadejia- Emirate.
Part of the fund was used on embarkment, and the construction of over 35 kilometers drainages as well as reclaim over 4.2 square meters of eroded areas to avert environmental degradation.
The state governor, Badaru Abubakar made this known on Monday at the flag off of tree planting campaign at Maigatari.
According to the governor, the state government has distributed over twelve million tree seedlings in the last six years for planting as part of efforts to fight desertification for ustainable clean, and healthy environment.
He said apart from the 35m expended on the embankment of River Hadejia, it also cleared about 180 kilometer of typa grass in 13 communities within 15 local government areas.
He added that more than 23,000 wood economy cooking stoves were produced and distributed as part of measures to reduce the rampant felling of trees for firewood.
Earlier, the jigawa state Commissioner for environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Baba Chai Chai said the ministry has produced two million different varieties of tree seedling for onward distribution to various ministries, parastatals for planting this year, as part of measures to control erosion, and desert enchroachnent across the state.
Also speaking chairman of Maigatari local government Mallam Uzairu Nadabo commended the state government for choosing Maigatari for this year’s flag off exercise and the launch of this year’s tree planting campaign.
He called on both workers in the area and the general public to ensure strict compliance of government directive in planting at least a tree in their surroundings.
