(SINL NIGERIA) The Managing Director of Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA), Adamu Sabo, has emphasized the crucial role women play in environmental sustainability and economic development.
This was stated at the Banquet Hall, Government House Dutse, venue of the International Women’s Day 2025 celebrated on Saturday.
Sabo highlighted the innovative initiatives underway to transform waste into wealth, particularly through upcycling and waste-to-wealth programs.
The occasion was organized by Jigawa State Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).
Sabo commended the unwavering support of UNICEF, whose technical expertise and commitment to sustainable development have been instrumental in making the project a success.
“With UNICEF’s backing, JISEPA has trained 600 women across Jigawa State in upcycling and waste-to-wealth initiatives, focusing on straps as a material often discarded as waste.
“The project aims to empower women to lead in environmental sustainability, creating new streams of income for women waste pickers, artisans, and small-scale entrepreneurs while contributing to environmental sustainability,” he stressed.
However, for empowering women for a Greener future, Sabo explained that through upcycling and waste-to-wealth initiatives, JISEPA is providing women with the chance to protect the environment and secure a better future for themselves and their families.
“The project aligns with UNICEF’s global “Green Rising” initiative, which aims to mobilize youth-led climate action through volunteering, green skills development, and environmental advocacy.
“By empowering women to lead in environmental sustainability, Jigawa State is taking a significant step towards building a greener, more equitable future for generations to come”, he concluded.
