A legal practitioner, Noah Ajare, has urged journalists in the country to take advantage of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations in tackling fake news in our society.
Ajare made the call while fielding questions from newsmen at the West Africa Journalism Innovation Conference held in Abuja.
The theme of the event was ”Accountability Journalism: Nurturing Innovation for a Sustainable Future.”
He said it is time to achieve the desired change with AI innovations to save lives while achieving the desired news coverage even under extreme and harsh, unfriendly and difficult regime in some parts of Africa.
“Telling our stories the African way is priceless, ensuring accountability is a major way to ensure that citizens enjoy the dividends of democracy.
“With AI, we can achieve both under safe environment and reduce fake news,” he said.
Ajare, who doubles as Publisher of African Peace Magazine UK and President of Association of West African Media Lawyers, said media practitioners should brace up for increased citizens journalism.
He said though the AI won’t make the transition easier, “we should focus on the benefits, instead of complaining. We should embrace it and bring in citizen journalism into the main stream and harmonise the benefits of Artificial intelligence for a better future.”
He said that the media plays a key role in checking the balance of power and in keeping the public informed, consequently enabling citizens to enjoy the dividends of democracy.
“AI in news media can certainly make journalism easier for overburdened resources without replacing journalists’ unique skills, and most importantly, protect them and make it easy to get justice,” he said.
