May Day: Ojukwu Advises FG to alleviate sufferings of Nigerian workers

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission Tony Ojukwu SAN, has lamented the plight of Nigerian workers and called for improved  working conditions while alleviating their sufferings.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission called on relevant authorities to seek improvement of the existing working conditions of Nigerian workers. 

Ojukwu, made this call in a statement commemorating the 2024 International Workers Day, which is observed globally, every May 1. 

The learned silk, while celebrating the achievements and resilience of workers, stated in clear terms that the essential role played by workers in shaping societies and economies globally, can not be overemphasized. 

The Executive Secretary who made known that the 2024  International Day of Workers underscored the resilience, dedication and sacrifice of Nigerian workers particularly in the face of unprecedented high cost of living in Nigeria.

In his words, the Nigeria Chief rights officer reaffirmed the Commission’s position, stating that “the NHRC remains unwavering in its commitment to advocating for the rights of all Nigerians, including workers”.

Continuing, the Executive Secretary urged the Government to consider the widespread agitation for wage increase and to equally address other areas such  as  high cost of goods,  poor power supply, transportation,  healthcare, insecurity and others. 

Speaking further, Dr. Ojukwu noted that, from ensuring workers enjoy fair wages, safe working conditions, combating discrimination  and exploitation of workers, the Commission remains dedicated in creating a comfortable environment where all workers will be treated with respect and dignity. 

This year’s theme “Climate change, safety and Health at work place”,  resonates deeply with the NHRC’S mandate of promoting and protecting the rights of all Nigerians, including their right to  upholding the well being, safety and the dignity of workers in all Sectors.
