The newly inaugurated chairman of the governing council of the Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, Enugu state, Dr. Silva Ameh has canvassed for more polytechnics in Nigeria.
He argued that there are 131 polytechnics in Nigeria, including the newly inaugurated one in Ohodo.
“Let me say very quickly that polytechnics in Nigeria are not enough. As at today, we have 131 polytechnics in Nigeria, including the ones that have been inaugurated today” he said.
Ameh made the disclosure on Tuesday at the inauguration of chairmen and governing council members of polytechnics and federal colleges of education held in Abuja.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the event, he said “what we are bringing on table is to create relevant education for the teeming youths in this country, what we are bringing to table in particular will be for industrialisation of this country”.
He explained that for Ngeria to claim the status of a giant of Africa, it should go into industrialisation to improve her economy.
“How do we be a giant of Africa, if we don’t go into industrialisation. We have to go into industrialisation to improve the economy, what the polytechnic will bring to the table will be to train, provide middle level manpower to run the industries”.
Continuing he said “The middlemen manpower we are going to bring to the table will be graduates of polytechnic. Who will not go to the streets looking for office jobs, they will be graduates that will work on their own.
“Above all, the polytechnic is situated in Ohodo, in eastern region, am proud to say that the Igbos who occupy that region are gifted with natural acumen for production and I want to make Ohodo to be an institution that will produce graduates that will make the eastern region economic hub for production” he said.
Ameh applauded President, Muhammadu Buhari who has considered him and others worthy of the appointment, “we are bringing a lot to the table, giving my cognate experiences. So we are going to give birth to a new polytechnic.
“The new polytechnic we are giving birth to in Ohodo. We are going there to set a new polytechnic, we believe in innovation, we are bringing innovation to bare. New innovations that will be legacy for us. In this case, I mean the Ohodo polytechnic will dwell in Technical education where people will have unfettered access to education in Nigeria” Ameh concluded.
The minister of Education had earlier inaugurated chairmen and governing council members of 8 federal polytechnics and 6 federal colleges of education.
