The House of Representatives has intervened into the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The House on Tuesday resolved to invite the leadership of ASUU and the Ministries of Labour and Education in an attempt to halt the strike and broker peace.
Member representing Jos South/Jos North Federal Constituency, Hon. Dachung Bagos, raising on order 8, rule 4 called on the House to urgently intervene in the rift between ASUU and the Federal Government over Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and other underlying issues.
Other members who contributed to the motion urged members to act in order to avert an indefinite strike, adding that the strike is a national embarrassment that should be avoided.
Recall, ASUU had on Monday, March 9th, 2020, commenced two weeks warning strike to protest the non-payment of salaries of lecturers not enrolled in the Federal Government’s Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
National President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, announced the strike at the end of the National Executive Council meeting(NEC) held at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).
He said the strike action was to compel the government to implement the agreement and resolution of Memorandum of Action it had with the union from 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2019.
