Following devastating windstorm in Laya and Fagam communities of Jigawa state, the Nigerian Senate has directed the ministry of humanitarian affairs and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide succour for the affected communities.
Indeed, the upper legislative chamber is seeking for relief materials especially building materials to enable the people of Laya and Fagam town to rebuild their homes.
This is sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Mustapha Khabeeb (Jigawa south west) at the plenary on Thursday.
The motion titled: “urgent need to provide palliative support to Laya, Gwaram local government area of Jigawa state” noted that windstorm on May 16th, 2024 has caused widespread destruction of lives, injuries, houses, farmlands and schools in the communities.
Speaking on the motion, senator Khabeeb said the windstorm has resulted in the displacement of people and families from their ancestral homes, farm animals as well as destroyed essential infrastructures.
“The affected towns are productive farming communities, most of the victims have migrated to Bauchi state.
“Rainfall came with windstorm and killed five people in Laya.
“We want immediate palliatives and building materials for the affected communities” Khabeeb said.
The lawmaker lamented that government agencies have failed to give disaster warnings and preparedness techniques to prevent and control disasters to local communities, thereby causing constant fear and lack of knowledge on preparedness across the country.
Consequently, the Senate mandated its committee on environment and compliance to ensure that Laya and Fagam communities get relief materials.
