The Senator representing Kano Central senatorial district, Rufai Hanga has dedicated the Leadership in Legislative Impact award conferred on him by NASSNews, Nigeria Assembly newspaper to his Kano Central constituents.
As the Senator representing Kano Central, one of Nigeria’s most populous constituencies, he was recognized as one of the top 10 lawmakers in Nigeria for the award for his performance in key areas like legislative priorities, intervention in education, bond with constituents, etc.
Some of his legislative efforts include flood control where he introduced a bill to establish a national framework for preventing and managing flood disasters, which has passed its first reading.
Drug abuse crisis also received Haga’s attention that made him sponsor a bill to establish “drug awareness and rehabilitation centres” across Nigeria. The bill has passed second reading and it is awaiting public hearing.
In education and food security, the lawmaker introduced a bill to establish a University of Agriculture in Kano State, aligning with the government’s policy to reduce hunger and ensure food security.
Senator Hanga’s passion for his constituents drives his work in initiatives such scholarships for students, payment of common entrance exams fees, vocational training programs for youth and women and agricultural empowerment through fish farms.
Responding after the award Hanga said he felt encouraged to do more, adding that “if you go by what I have done in the constituency and look at the budget, nothing is missing from what I produced there”.
He said he always does his best in the Senate, especially in the committee sessions”, which he said must have earned him the award.
Hanga came to the venue of award ceremony Wednesday with large number of supporters in red caps shouting “kwankwasiya”.
Hanga, who is member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) said his loyalty party membership, which stems from his long experience in politics since 1978 has been his greatest asset.
“I have been in politics for a very long time. I’m very experienced. I have been in politics since 1978. Naturally, you expect me to be a party loyalist. So long as I agree to belong to a party, I should be loyal and certainly must do my best to give an example for those coming behind us”, he said.
