The Chairman of Alumni of University of Jos, Gad Peter Shamaki has solicited collaboration of the media in Plateau State for awareness creation on security of students and growth of the Institution.
He noted that the support of the media will provide a conducive working atmosphere between students, staff and members of the University community.
Mr. Shamaki disclosed this on Friday during a courtesy visit to members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Plateau State Council in Jos.
“One of the major concern for us as an association is the security of students, staffs and the institution, over the years the university of Jos has come under all manners of threats”.
He urged all communities around the university to build a robust relationship within themselves, motorcycle riders, tricycle association, national union of road transport workers and petroleum stations.
“Even when there is break down of law and order, those Communities will take upon themselves to protect every student and staff of the University and to ensure that no harm happen to the institution.
“We can only achieve this with the support of the media and constructive engagement, and we are hoping that when such visits are going to happen, we will extend a couple of invitation to you to support us and to be able to part of that.
“Talking about security too, we hope to engage all the divisional police stations, offices and communities around the University so as to safeguard students and the University.
“Once we have a relationship between those Communities around the university, they will be able to safeguard students and their properties”.
He said they had a meeting with the vice Chancellor and he mentioned the need for us to have an endorsement or scholarship to assist indigent students.
“We can not achieve this without your support sir, your support in terms of creating awareness, make people feel that these are excos we can trust and work with”.
Chairman Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigerian Union of Journalists, Plateau State, Gyang Bere said “the issue of security of students of University of Jos is very Paramount and I am glad that you have also taken that as part of your priority to ensure that we create a mutual understanding between the host Community and immediate Community at the university, so that students can be protected at all cost”.
“We will do everything within our capacity as journalists to ensure that we give you the needed publicity, support and will create awareness on what is happening concerning the university of Jos”.
He applauded the alumni chairman for taking such bold step and assured him of his support so as to have a university that will be well known globally.
