Voter apathy characterised the Gwaram House of Representatives bye-election on Saturday across the federal constituency in Jigawa state.
The election was scheduled to elect a replacement for former member of the House of Representatives Alhaji Yuguda Kila who died after a protracted illness.
The voting which started behind scheduled time of 8 o’clock in the morning suffered low turnout of voters in most of the polling units visited by SINL Nigeria Online correspondent.
A first republic minister Senator Bello Maitama who voted at the Kofar Fada special primary School however said the turn out of voters was impressive.
Senator Maitama also commended the process as, “quick, efficient and peaceful”, stating that the people are more alive to their responsibility in the choice of their leaders.
However, at the Sara ward at the Kofar Fada 001polling unit, the council Chairman Alhaji Muhammed Dan Asabe Sara was denied voting by the presiding officer of the unit when he could not present his voters card.
The electoral officer stood her ground that the chairman will not vote despite pressures from the police officer and politicians in company of the chairman.
The chairman left the polling unit fuming that he was denied the right to vote.
Meanwhile, the general conduct of the election was peaceful but with occasional case of alleged vote buying by some politicians.
