(SINL NIGERIA) The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) has described the call on president Tinubu by Center for Democracy and Development, CDD to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State as politically motivated.
Recall, the CDD convener, Ibrahim Yakubu had on Sunday in a statement urged the president to declare state of emergency in Zamfara State, following the suspension of some members of the State House of Assembly for 13 months.
The State chapter of PDP in a statement issued by the party’s publicity secretary, Haliru Andi said that the Convener of CDD, Yakubu claimed that the lawmakers were suspended simply for expressing concerns about the State’s security situation.
The statement added that the call on President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the State by the Center for Democracy and Development, CDD, Convener was politically motivated and an ill wind that can blow nobody any good.
“Ibrahim Yakubu should have known that a politically motivated declaration of emergency in opposition states can lead to a crackdown on opposition voices, human rights activists, and ordinary citizens”, he said.
“A politically motivated state of emergency can be used by the government to consolidate power, silence opponents, and undermine democratic institutions”
“A politically motivated state of emergency in opposition states can give the government the opportunity to use the military forces to quell opposition”
“A politically motivated state of emergency can undermine democratic institutions such as the judiciary, legislature, and the private media”
“A politically motivated state of emergency can lead to a loss of public trust in politics, which can have long-term consequences for democratic governance”
‘Groups, political organizations, and individuals that persistently call on the Federal government to declare a politically motivated state of emergency in opposition states are a bunch of selfish, cheap publicity seekers, and uninformed people simply undermining democratic institutions, for mere self-aggrandizement”
“Yakubu of the Center for Democracy and Development or rather center for the destruction of democracy, (CDD) should come to Zamfara State to find out the glaring and appreciable achievements of Governor Dauda Lawal in the area of security and other critical sectors, before feeding the public with his fabricated lies” the statement concluded.
