President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has thrown his weight behind the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in the recruitment of 774,000 youths across Nigeria.

Lawan, who reiterated the suspension of the programme, however added that the NDE and the Ministry Labour and Productivity must first explain the modalities for the recruitment process.

The Senate President spoke during an interactive session with newsmen on Monday in Abuja.

“Only NDE will implement this programme. The NDE led by the ministry of labour will have to come and explain.

“It will be unfair to say that we in the legislature and executive are not on the same page because of an action by someone in the executive.

“What the National Assembly is insisting on is in national interest.”

It would be recalled that lawmakers and Minister of Labour and Productivity Festus Keyamo on Tuesday disagreed over recruitment of 774,000 Public Works Programme, under the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).

SINL Nigeria had reported that the lawmakers had invited Keyamo to give details of the planned recruitment.

Specifically, the joint Committe of the National Assembly on Labour sought to find out the method of selection of a 20-man Committe from each state for the programme.

However, a heated argument erupted when Keyamo, who is in charge of the programme was invited by the National Assembly joint Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity to explain how the States’ Selection Committees for the Extended Special Public Works Programme was done.

Indeed, Keyamo insisted that his ministry was asked to supervise the recruitment by President Muhammadu Buhari.
