The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday said the monthly dashboard for January recorded 1147 complaint across the 36 states and federal capital territory in January.
According to the commission, Nigeria faces multiples challenges in the protection and enjoyment of Human Rights for the citizens.
The Commission noted that upon the coming of the new administration of the federal government, fuel subsidy was removed which led to increasing inequality and affected human rights.
A senior human rights adviser, Hillary Ogbonna revealed that the NHRC in exercise of its mandate has established human rights dashboard and observatory.
“Dashboard will be our monthly analysis, observatory – we want to look at human rights complaints available to us on daily basis.
“It will capture our monitoring and analysis and across Nigeria” Ogbonna said.
Giving a breakdown of complaints received across Nigeria, the senior human rights adviser said 67 percent representing 528 complaints were on domestic violence, while violations by state actors, mainly the Nigeria Police recorded 73 complaints.
He said 11 percent representing 83 complaints were by non state actors. He added that the non state actors include, Boko Haram, ISWAP, Bandits, militia and private security.
According to Ogbonna, the dashboard received 64 complaints representing 6 percent, while Rights to life posted 5 percent representing 40 complaints, among others.
Specifically, he said the highest number of domestic violence is in the northwest, followed by north Central geopolitical zone, stressing that the south west recorded the least number of human rights violations.
Also speaking, Director of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Harry Obe emphasised on the significance of the dashboard, saying “it is another level of living up to our responsibility on human rights”.
He said with the dashboard, you can have real time information.
“This is where to go, if you want to have Human Rights situation in Nigeria, this is where to go” Obe said.
