Newcastle United have been tipped to pursue a deal for Real Madrid midfielder Luca Modric if a proposed takeover of the Premier League club proves successful.

Lawyers working on behalf of the Premier League are analysing the £300 million bid from the controversial Saudi public investment fund.

Officials are going through the Premier League Owners and Directors’ Test and deciding whether the deal can proceed, with other interested parties believed to be waiting in the wings.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has said that calls to block the Saudi Arabia-led takeover bid are being “fully considered”.

If the deal goes ahead, the arrival of Sheik Bin Salman to the club’s shareholders would mean increased money for transfers with Modric a reported target.

According to reports, Newcastle will negotiate a deal for the experienced Croatian, whose contract with Real Madrid ends in the summer of 2021.

Real are apparently not keen on a renewal for the 34-year-old and the report claims Newcastle officials have already been in contact with Modric’s agent.

The former Spurs man knows his time at Real Madrid is coming to an end and he has been linked with Inter Milan and Manchester United, but the Geordies are keen on offering Modric the final contract of his illustrious career.

The source claims “the operation would be around €25/30 million”.
