The Presidency on Sunday decried recent comments made by Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State, falsely accusing President Bola Tinubu of supporting the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
A statement titled: “Setting the record straight: President Tinubu’s role in the June 12 struggle, signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy said the claims by Lamido are a distortion of history and an attempt at revisionism.
Specifically, the statement said that Lamido’s allegations that President Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, mobilized market women to support the annulment are patently false.
“In reality, Tinubu was a vocal critic of the annulment, and his contributions to the Senate floor in 1993 demonstrate his commitment to upholding the election.
“As a senator at the time, Tinubu condemned the annulment, describing it as another coup d’état and urged Nigerians to reject injustice and lawlessness”.
Continuing, the statement added “he stood firm in his support for the June 12 election, even when others, including Lamido, failed to oppose the military’s injustice”.
The statement recalled “National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) was formed in 1994 to push for the restoration of democracy, and Tinubu played a leading role in the organization.
“He funded pro-June 12 protests, including the blockade of the Third Mainland Bridge, and provided material resources to fuel the struggle”.
“It is disappointing that Lamido, despite acknowledging Tinubu’s role in NADECO, would attempt to rewrite history for political reasons.
“We advise Lamido to check his facts before spreading falsehoods, as revisionism does not serve the cause of truth or our nation’s interests” the statement added.
Additionally, the presidency stated that President Tinubu was a steadfast advocate for democracy, while Lamido and others reportedly capitulated in the face of military oppression and intimidation.
