The bill seeking to regulate the social media suffered set back at the Nigerian senate public hearing on Monday in Abuja.
Recall, the bill, which passed second reading at plenary Wednesday, November 20, was passed to Senate committee on judiciary and return back in four weeks, was on Monday presented at a public hearing for consideration to enhance more legislative work.
Titled, “Protection from internet falsehoods, manipulations and other related matters bill, 2019, was sponsored by Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (APC, Niger East).
But at the hearing on Monday, scores opposed the bill and urged the upper legislative chamber to drop the bill.
Specifically, only three out of over 20 agencies and groups who spoke, were in support of the bill.
Among those who threw their weight behind the proposed legislation are the Nigerian army and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
The Nigerian Governors Forum was not specific, saying governors were yet to articulate and take a position on the bill.
